Space Technology 5 multi-point measurements of near-Earth magnetic fields: Initial results

چکیده
[1] The Space Technology 5 (ST-5) mission successfully placed three micro-satellites in a 300 4500 km dawn-dusk orbit on 22 March 2006. Each spacecraft carried a boommounted vector fluxgate magnetometer that returned highly sensitive and accurate measurements of the geomagnetic field. These data allow, for the first time, the separation of temporal and spatial variations in field-aligned current (FAC) perturbations measured in low-Earth orbit on time scales of 10 sec to 10 min. The constellation measurements are used to directly determine field-aligned current sheet motion, thickness, and current density. In doing so, we demonstrate two multi-point methods for the inference of FAC current density that have not previously been possible in low-Earth orbit: 1) the ‘‘standard method,’’ based upon s/c velocity, but corrected for FAC current sheet motion, and 2) the ‘‘gradiometer method’’ which uses simultaneous magnetic field measurements at two points with known separation. Future studies will apply these methods to the entire ST-5 data set and expand to include geomagnetic field gradient analyses as well as field-aligned and ionospheric currents. Citation: Slavin, J. Performance Evaluation of the High-altitude Launch Technique to Orbit Using Atmospheric Properties
The purpose of this paper is to perform the feasibility and performance evaluation of the High-altitude launch technique using high altitude atmospheric Properties to near earth orbits. The current propulsion transportation system from Earth to space has been deemed by many to be expensive, unreliable, and an unnecessarily dangerous means of travel to space. It is suggested in this paper to ana...
متن کاملThe NEAR Magnetic Field Instrument
The primary objective of the Magnetic Field Instrument on the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) spacecraft is to search for and characterize the magnetic field of the asteroid Eros to better understand the origin and evolution of this planetary body. The instrument consists of a three-axis fluxgate magnetometer with a sensor mounted on the high-gain antenna feed structure of the NEAR spacec...
متن کاملRayleigh Waves in a Homogeneous Magneto-Thermo Voigt-Type Viscoelastic Half-Space under Initial Surface Stresses
This paper deals with the propagation of magneto-thermo Rayleigh waves in a homogeneous viscoelastic half-space under initial stress. It has been observed that velocity of Rayleigh waves depends on viscosity, magnetic field, temperature and initial stress of the half-space. The frequency equation for Rayleigh waves under the effect of magnetic field, stress and temperature for both viscoelastic...
متن کاملThe effect of earth magnetic field on the function of nuclear medicine imaging systems (SPECT)
Background: The nuclear medicine systems are very sensitive to the variation of the magnetic field. Photomultiplier tubes amplify low energy light signal and change it into electrical current. Low magnetic field can produce some variations in uniformity and special resolution of SPECT systems. In this study, we tried to evaluate the effects of magnetic field on the function of nuclear medic...
متن کاملSolutions of initial and boundary value problems via F-contraction mappings in metric-like space
We present sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions of second-order two-point boundary value and fractional order functional differential equation problems in a space where self distance is not necessarily zero. For this, first we introduce a Ciric type generalized F-contraction and F- Suzuki contraction in a metric-like space and give relevance to fixed point results. To illustrate...
